I was born in the South of England and then lived in various places in England and abroad before settling in the North West of England. I have always enjoyed painting and from an early age loved to watch and then paint everything around me.
Our planet is an amazing place and I feel that it needs all the help it can get to keep its beauty and vitality, so in my small way I do my best to create eco-friendly artwork. I try to make all of my creative work as eco-friendly as possible, which means using art materials which are kind to the environment.
When using watercolours I love working with fresh, clear colour glazes over detailed pen sketches to create my own unique style. I take my inspiration from the people and activities I observe in everyday life, and as I travel around I keep my sketch book handy to record my impressions of atmosphere, colour and interesting characters along the way.
I begin with as many as 20 resource sketches, depending on the complexity of the painting, and then work out the colour palette according to the atmosphere I want to convey. I gain my inspiration from the world around me, I love to paint people and interactions between people, when they are just going about their daily lives in an unguarded way they are at their most interesting and characterful.
I create vibrant contemporary narrative artworks that portray moments in time from daily life. For many years I created large dynamic works in an abstract or semi abstract style using acrylics, oils and pastels, but following an accident two years ago which damaged my back I now find it difficult to paint standing at my easel for long periods to create large works on canvas or board.
This initial difficulty forced me to search for a solution and lead to the development of a totally new style of work, and I now create detailed watercolour paintings with fresh modern colours, as well as smaller acrylics and oil paintings in a size that can be managed more easily from a seated position.
I want my paintings to draw the viewer back time and time again, looking at the little details and enjoying the humour and characters in the scene.
When I am not in my studio I love to grow my own vegetables and fruit, read crime novels (I do love a good murder) and spend time out and about looking for fresh inspiration.
I add new artwork very regularly so please bookmark the site and keep coming back!
I am glad you came and I hope you enjoy your visit.
